And that's what makes Galactica a great TV series. For that, much credit is due to the immensely compelling cast of characters Battlestar Galactica burns with a combustive mixture of political turmoil and human drama that is as achingly real and relevant as anything on television.

Mary McNamara of the Los Angeles Times praised the show's ability to "anchor fantasy with vivid and recognizable human psychology" and declares that the series is "not just a cult hit but a significant piece of television.

What rights and actions are sacrosanct, which are outlawed, when most of the human race is eliminated? Thanks to a stellar cast and brave writing, Battlestar soars.

Ryan comments: "There's nothing like a good Battlestar plot twist to make your head spin, but the 'holy cow' moments aren't the main point though they're one heck of a tasty side dish.

The show and its twists and turns are grounded in deep curiosity about human nature, and how contradictory and confounding it can be.

Matt Soergel of The Florida Times-Union stated: "Its propulsive and complex storytelling is matched by, at best, just a handful of theatrical movies a year.

It would proclaim the program the best show on television in December of the same year. The explosions and the killer robots are cool, but they don't stack up to seeing fully-drawn people - brought to life by a great writing staff led by producer Ron Moore and an astonishing cast led by Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell - grapple with these life-or-death, genocide-level decisions.

The series also draws praise for having many strong and complex female characters. The series has also received favorable reviews from other writers.

Stephen King wrote, "This is a beautifully written show, driven by character rather than effects And there's not a better acting troupe at work on television.

Some fans of the original s series opposed the re-imagined series since the time it premiered, due to what was perceived as its darker, more confused tone.

In a May article from Dreamwatch magazine titled "Starbuck: Lost in Castration", Dirk Benedict , who portrayed Lieutenant Starbuck in the original series, harshly criticized the re-imagined series, citing its dark tone and supposed moral relativism.

Other critics, even those who wrote rave reviews about the first two seasons of the series, felt that a major drop in quality occurred in the third season, continuing into the fourth and final season.

In particular, the controversial series finale drew heavy criticism, largely due to the view that it failed to explain many of the main plotlines which had been teased throughout the series' run.

Charlie Jane Anders of io9. Even Battlestar Galactica couldn't be Battlestar Galactica for longer than a few years.

By halfway through the third season, the cracks are pretty apparent, as the show detours into romance subplots. The writers start throwing out curveballs like randomly selected Cylons and Starbuck's inexplicable and unexplained resurrection.

By the time the show ended, its mystique was somewhat tarnished, and its ending remains controversial to this day.

There was a time, not long ago, when BSG was considered the gold standard for science fiction television.

Tense, multilayered, complicated, and filled with morally gray characters — it was all the things we always clamor for but seldom get.

The show stumbled somewhat in its third season, with the boxing episode and a boring love triangle.

But it didn't actually become raw suckage until Starbuck died for no reason, and then came back from the dead for no reason.

The writers have basically admitted they had no plan for killing and resurrecting Starbuck — they just thought it would be a cool thing to do, and they would figure out the reasons later.

And thus, we ended up with a year of Starbuck Interrupted, constantly shouting "You're going the wrong way! In a Commentary article on the prevalence of Bush Derangement Syndrome in popular culture, Jonah Goldberg analyzed the show's "radically bizarre and nonsensical turn of events Originally, the series was very difficult to pigeonhole ideologically.

When it came time to make the third season The humans were no longer analogized to Americans; rather Americans were analogized to genocidal occupiers.

In other words, we are no longer the inspiration for the futuristic Israelites trying to survive. We are now the Nazis. Renowned fantasy author George R.

Martin expressed his extreme dissatisfaction with how the writers handled the ending of the TV series, commenting:. Battlestar Galactica ends with 'God Did It.

Yeah, yeah, sometimes the journey is its own reward. I certainly enjoyed much of the journey with BSG But damn it, doesn't anybody know how to write an ending any more?

Razor is also the first two episodes of Season 4 though it chronicles events on Battlestar Pegasus in two time periods, both of which are "in the past" with respect to the Season 4 continuity.

The "present day" framing scenes are set during Lee Adama's command of the Pegasus in the latter half of Season 2, while "flashback" scenes depict Helena Cain's command in the period between the Cylon attack shown in the mini-series and the reunion with the Galactica in the second season.

An expanded version of the movie was released on DVD on December 4, The first set of webisodes were a series of shorts produced in to promote the third season of the re-imagined show.

Each of the ten webisodes was approximately three minutes long, and they were released twice a week leading up to the U.

Season 3 premiere in The Razor Flashbacks were a series of seven webisodes produced in , set some 40 years earlier during William Adama's fighter pilot days during the later stages of the First Cylon War.

They were released on the Internet as "webisodes" leading up to Razor' s release. The installments that did not make the final cut include 1, 2, and the latter half of 7.

In May , a set of 10 webisodes were announced to be in the works which were released during the seven-month hiatus between episodes 10 and 11 of Season 4.

Caprica is a prequel television series to the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica. It premiered on Syfy formerly Sci-Fi on January 22, , and was described as "television's first science fiction family saga ".

It was a two-hour back door pilot for a possible weekly television series, but on December 2, , Syfy gave the go-ahead to expand the project into a full, episode series.

Caprica is set on the titular planet , 58 years before the events of Battlestar Galactica. The show revolves around two families, the Adamas and the Graystones, and the creation of the Cylons.

On October 27, , Syfy canceled Caprica due to low ratings. The final five episodes were aired in the US on January 4, [23] though they had aired a couple of months earlier on the Canadian network Space.

The entire series was released on DVD in Moore to produce another spin-off set in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica universe, which was to begin as a two-hour pilot focused on William "Husker" Adama portrayed by Luke Pasqualino during the First Cylon War as was glimpsed in Razor and the corresponding webisodes.

Syfy decided against moving forward with the Blood and Chrome TV series, but on November 5, it was announced that a part webseries would begin on November 9, and be released over four weeks via Machinima.
